Another new feature users can look forward to is the My World storage folder. The feature will maintain all of the user’s downloads on the home screen and provides the ability to wirelessly re-install a file if it is accidentally deleted or the user upgrades to another device.

Let’s hope that all BlackBerry users are just happy to see it pushing forward.

BlackBerry developers get new market in Nigeria.

Research In Motion (RIM) has announced that the Blackberry App World, official application store for BlackBerry phones, that was initially closed to users in Nigeria has now been launched. BlackBerry owners in Nigeria can now download apps on their phones with any internationally recognized smartcard.

Most of mobile applications stores are usually closed for mobile users in Africa as these regions are not considered as major markets. However, with tough competition in major markets and growing popularity of smartphones in African countries has led to shift in strategies of app stores. The launch of Blackberry App World in Nigeria therefore is an important major milestone in the process of providing better access to mobile content for users in these regions.

Speaking at the Mobile Web West Africa conference in Lagos, Deon Liebenberg, RIM Managing Director for Africa said: “We are very pleased to offer this experience to our customers in Nigeria, which we see as a very exciting market going forward.”

What Blackberry developer can expect from the newly launched Blackberry Payment service

Whatever is the model of your Blackberry App be it Free, paid, ad-supported, try-and-buy, or freemium , Blackberry has introduced their three new services in interest of blackberry developers namely Advertising , Payment and Analytics for the tons of apps making their way to the Blackberry app world in the coming year .
If an ad-supported model doesn’t fit your needs, maybe micro-transactions/in-app payment is more up your alley. The BlackBerry Payment Service will allow you to easily offer digital goods for sale in your app while still providing the consumer with the same trusted and consistent purchase experience they have today in BlackBerry App World. As you would expect, with BlackBerry Payment Service, you will have access to the same payment options that BlackBerry App World supports today for traditional app purchases: PayPal, credit card, and carrier billing.

BlackBerry Payment Service can be used in :

  • Digital Content, such as eBooks, magazines, photos, artwork, or digital property that you can use on a BlackBerry smartphone.
  • Additional App Functionality, which might include things like new features, levels, characters, or games. This use lends itself extremely well to the freemium app model and should be used as the new gold standard for try-and-buy.
  • Services, such as premium video content, subscription renewal, pay-as-you-go application use, or voice transcription. Basically, any kind of digital service that a BlackBerry smartphone user pays to use.

The Payment Service enables developers to leverage a range of business models through the sale of digital goods within their applications. The Payment Service is simple and easy to implement for developers and provides end users with a fast, consistent and secure purchase experience.

The service comes as a boon to Blackberry application developers who always had a desire to generate some decent revenue out of their try and buy business model which lagged in terms of payment service. The BlackBerry Payment Service SDK is in beta now and the full SDK and app implementation is expected to launch this fall.

Some of the key features of the Blackberry Analytics service :

  • Key app metrics such as when and how often a user opens your app.
  • Information about how much time a user spends in your app.
  • User base stats such as which model of BlackBerry smartphone is being used, which version of software the user has installed, which carrier network the user is on, and which version of your application the user has installed.
  • Flexibility to define your own metrics such as how many users make it to a certain level or actually complete a game, which features of the app are accessed more commonly than others, how and when users access remote data on a server versus leveraging cached content.

RIM acquires Cellmania

CellMania

Recently the news of RIM having acquired Cellmania came up , cellmania is a mobile storefront operator, and the acquisition is something really small but could turn out to be one of the larger acquisitions the company has made in quite some time.  As it stands right now, BlackBerry App World has launched paid applications in 55 countries but have not as yet, been able to totally grab carriers with their offerings.

Given that Cellmania has agreements in place with such companies as Telstra, Telus, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Sprint, Airtel, AT&T, Boost Mobile, Optus, Orange, among others for their white labelled service, mFinder this puts Research In Motion in a good spot. While most of the focus around the acquisition has stated that Research In Motion may use Cellmania to help with BlackBerry App World that may not be the full scenario.

Rather then assisiting directly with BlackBery App World, Cellmania could be looked at as more of another method of distribution since they already have a great infrastructure in place. Handling billling, payments and delivery of applications is what Cellmania has excelled at thus far. It’s still too early to say what Research In Motion plans to do with Cellmania but, given Cellmanias scope of business it’s conceivable that their services will be utilized in more ways then one. Be it streamilining the workings of BlackBerry App World or opening up other doors to gain access to a wide array of carrier support . This acquisition will be a great news for Blackberry application developers because now the application rates have been reduced to a good amount and distribution of apps could be easier , users who cannot buy paid apps could now get their apps conveniently .

BlackBerry App World 2.0 rock n roll out soon

blackberry developerAfter the successful release in beta version, BlackBerry App World 2.0 is now set to roll out to the masses at some point today. Lots of new things happening with the actual release version that were not fully present in the beta release. A quick breakdown is as follows:

Credit Card Payment Option

  • With the new BlackBerry App World, customers are able to purchase applications using major credit cards, including Visa and MasterCard. Carrier billing may also be supported by certain carriers.

Easier Application Discovery

  • BlackBerry App World adds new tabbed sections for various applications lists. Users can horizontally swipe or scroll to quickly view the Top 25 Free Apps, Top 25 Paid Apps and Top 25 Themes, as well as the Newest Apps and Recently Updated Apps.

QR barcode scanning

  • Is now  supported, allowing users to scan a QR code associated with an application from anywhere – the web, print ads, brochures, etc. BlackBerry App World will quickly find the related application, and automatically open and download its page.

BlackBerry ID

  • BlackBerry ID provides customers with a device-independent user identification (ID) for BlackBerry App World. It enables credit card payments and allows customers to seamlessly transfer their personal library of free and purchased apps when they switch to a new BlackBerry smartphone.

The UI changes and overall performance enhancements that BlackBerry App World 2.0 brings should make it a great update. One of the most notable changes however though, is that BlackBerry App World as of today will allow developers to set pricing on their apps starting at $0.99. The upgrade is set to be rolled out today, so be on the lookout for an update notification so that you may get the most up to date release when it becomes available. In case anyone was counting as well, BlackBerry App World now has paid apps in 58 countries. This is very exciting for blackberry application developers and ofcourse a great move to push blackberry application development to new heights and users will be able to penetrate and use Blackberry world with ease.

Bad News For Blackberry Developers : RIM To Take Additional 10% On Apps

RIM has sent a notice to all blackberry developers which
states that they are going to take an additional 10% revenue on every paid app listed on Blackberry app market . Previously RIM allowed developers to keep 80% of the revenue they earned but now developers can only take away 70% of the revenue.

Blackberry says this has to be done in order to support the expansion into new markets and allow additional billing models. Blackberry is implementing credit card billing which is also offered by Apple in iTunes. Despite the lack of distribution of apps and a platform that is desperately in need of good developers this was a silly move on RIM’s part. This has largely discouraged Blackberry developers coming up with pretty good apps .

Blackberry had sent this copy of notice to all Blackberry developers  associated to the Blackberry App world vendor portal 2.0

Attention BlackBerry App World Vendors
We hope you are enjoying the new BlackBerry App World Vendor Portal 2.0, which adds a variety of new features and capabilities to make it easier for you to distribute your applications on BlackBerry smartphones!

We are now taking the first step to introduce credit card and carrier billing support for BlackBerry App World, as announced at the 2009 BlackBerry Developer Conference.  These new billing models will open up additional opportunities for you to sell your applications in new markets.

In part to support the addition of these new billing models, if you are distributing paid applications, there are changes to your agreement with Digital River.  This email is provided as notice to you, by RIM on behalf of Digital River, of changes to your Digital River Vendor Agreement.  You will find both black-line and clean copies of the amended Digital River Vendor Agreement attached.

In addition, there are also changes to your agreement with RIM.  This email also provides notice to you of changes to your RIM Vendor Agreement.  You will find black-line and clean copies of the amended RIM Vendor Agreement attached.

These new agreements will also be posted in the Vendor Portal shortly.

The changes in these agreements include an update to the BlackBerry App World revenue share from 80% to 70%.   This change is being made to support the expansion into new markets and to allow for the additional billing models referenced above.

We are also introducing Bango as the Merchant of Record for carrier billed transactions.  If you are distributing paid applications, you will soon be presented with the Bango Vendor Agreement, for acceptance, when logging into the Vendor Portal.

Our goal is to ensure that BlackBerry App World provides developers with unique opportunities to successfully monetize applications created on the BlackBerry application platform.  We hope that you are as excited as we are about these new billing models.
Best regards,

BlackBerry App World Management

This is definitely going to affect Blackberry development in the coming months ,if blackberry doesn’t think about the Blackberry developers they may jump to other platforms for better opportunities.
